Trained in the area of civil construction, he abandons the activity in 2005. In 2006 he establishes as an independent photographer to dedicate himself to exploring the territories of documentary photography as an artistic practice. He was a member photographer of the collective Kameraphoto between 2006 and 2014. Between 2009 and 2012, he collaborated as a photojournalist with some titles of the Portuguese and international press with award-winning works, highlighting in 2011 the International Prize of Photojournalism Estação Imagem.
Since 2014 he dedicates entirely to personal projects to produce photographs where he seeks that the aesthetic function is not distinguished from the political, the social, what is cultural, as a thing of thought, belonging and occupation of the territory. As a method, he works in delimited areas under possession of something or someone that make up the map of the territory of Portugal.
"Urdidura" is his last individual book from the project "Viagens na minha terra".
Nelson D'Aires is represented in photography collections such as BESart and Fundação EDP.
