In 1996 he completed his bachelor's degree in Audiovisual Communication Technologies. In the same year, he attended advanced training in photography at the Karel school of Grote-Hogescholl Antwerpen, in Belgium, and did an internship in digital and large format photography at Studio Brison, also in Belgium. In Portugal, he worked as a freelancer with several magazines, in the area of reportage and architectural photography. In 2000, he finished his degree in Social Communication and in 2005 the degree in Photography.
In 2005, wins three honorable mentions in the photojournalism contest of Visão magazine and wins the architecture photography category of the Euro Press Photo Awards by Fuji Film.
He was awarded the Estação Imagem | Mora Prize in 2010 and 2011.
Since 1999, he has been a photojournalist at PÚBLICO newspaper.
In 2015, he exhibited his personal project "Home Less" at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
Nelson Garrido works in the areas of photojournalism, architecture and food photography.
